Road House The Play

I’ve had the time of my life. And I owe it all to Franky P. for pointing out the world's best play ever. (Thanks also to Tanya Bershadsky for the tickets!)

So, ROAD HOUSE The Play, was pretty fantastic. A shot-for-shot remake of the movie, it stars Taimak (aka “Bruce Leroy” from Berry Gordy’s THE LAST DRAGON) in a blonde mullet wig as the Swayze character, Dalton. A bouncer with a philosophy degree, and a deadly throat-ripping ability, Taimak (and his wig) demonstrate the beauty of Swayze and the art of the kicked-ass in more ways than I could imagine.

Hailed as a “brawlsical” the play has no big song and dance numbers; instead it features well-choreographed fight scenes. Each cast member (other than Taimak) plays at least three roles, however, what they saved on actors, they spent on additional ripped-sleeved flannel shirts and a variety of wig-bearing baseball caps.

As the movie was long on special effects (fires, breakaway glass, etc.) and the play was short on funds, the crew got creative in re-enacting many scenes. My personal favorite was the "window" they created for characters to get thrown through. Graphic designer Gabriel Evans built an entire set in miniature which is used throughout the performance with a live video feed to recreate certain scenes (such as the “big foot”/monster truck that drives over several cars).

All in all, it's funny, sassy, and entertaining, with some fantastic music choices throughout. The theater is intimate, so any seat in the house is a good one. Tickets are available through smarttix.com and they've given two discount codes for $25 seats (DALTON or MULLET). If that's not cheap enough, see it from the balcony for $19.89 (the year the movie was released). And if that STILL isn't cheap enough (you cheap bastard), you can try to win tickets from kittenpants by taking the QUIZ.

ROAD HOUSE THE PLAY is a little reminiscent of the Seattle, WA, Little Theatre's production of “POINT BREAK Live,” which featured a new, unrehearsed "Keanu" at each performance. Continuing in the movie-to-stage tradition, Seattle's Consolidated Works has recently received worldwide attention for bringing THE BREAKFAST CLUB to life.

My point is, it's all great news to me, as it furthers my determination to make "RED DAWN: The Musical" into a reality. I'll let you know...
