Danny Lama

kp: How did you get SUCKER'S LUCK together?
dl:
It was formed to open up for CONVULSION CABARET, they needed an opening band, and Billy (Ficca) was interested in playing the material that was in SUCKER'S LUCK.

kp: So your side project took over?
dl:
Yes, well that was always the master plan.

kp: What makes you write this stuff down and then put it to music?
dl:
I'm a magnet for reporting stories. I report them, it's not political, I'm not trying to be political at all. It's apolitical. I think it's viable story telling. I think I buy into the fact that music is a healing process and more than anything the words reflect the absurdity of life and everyday situations that are really funny. And I just try to record them in a memorable way.

kp: What about the need to perform them?
dl:
It's a good way to make money, if the money is there. But as for the viability of it, coming out and singing the same thing every night, yeah that can get redundant, so you gotta find new ways to make it stick with new approaches. It's remarkable how many ways you can come out and say the same old story. You can always twist it around. It might come out differently cause of the room, or it might be preordained. The key is phrasing.

kp: Do you have any songs directly relating to NYC?
dl:
I have a song written about a friend of mine hallucinating at the Filmore East. It's based on a story he told me where he hallucinates a birth.

kp: Who was your friend?
dl:
The Tattooed Vampire.

kp: Didn't BLUE OYSTER CULT do a song about him? "Tattooed Vampire Sucking the skin?"
dl:
He's recently deceased. He got me in to see a lot of shows. He influenced me; as a song writer and his charisma as a reluctant performer.

kp: Is it true that the name SUCKER'S LUCK came from the brood of unclaimed children you have?
dl:
I'm not aware of any.

kp: How would you describe the people who come to see you at CBGB's?
dl:
Post-moderate study hall venison.

kp: Do you have enemies that you've made along the way?
dl:
I plan to remember or want to talk about the good things I've done, the positive.
