INTERVIEW: Gary Gygax

kp: Do you get a lot of ladies who are into RPG? Are you the "Tom Jones" of the convention circuit?
gg: Ho-ho-ho! Let us say that I am a friendly and generally affable person who has many fans at conventions, 99% of whom are just other male gamers like me.

kp: What did you think of the movie MAZES AND MONSTERS? Did it make you mad that it came across as a warning to kids against RPGs like D&D? Or were you just disappointed in Tom Hank's performance?
gg: Rona Jaffe's pot-boiler book made into a film gives it no merit. The book was worthless in all senses, and so too the film. The persons concerned are as cynical as the news media. Who cares about facts when there's money to be made?
kp: Okay, so what monster from the Monster Manual or Fiend Folio scares you the most?
gg: Me personally? None at all! From the standpoint of a PC, though, quite a few... Of the lot, though, I think a new one that's been done for the LA game, a Living Dead monster called the "soucouyant" is perhaps the most hideous creature I've come across. It's up on the Dragonsfoot website in the LA Game section. It's creator, Angel Stewart, gets a bow from me :)

kp: If you had the ability to cast any cleric/Druid/Magic-User spell what would it be and what would you do with it?
gg: Oh boy, what a question. How about a Wish spell to wish that I was a real mage and could then use all the spells and abilities for real that are just make-believe in the game? That way I'd then be able to pretty much have whatever I wanted without effort. Reminds me of many a joke about genies and all, right?

kp: In the Fiend Folio, There was a regular Roc, but why was there never a Punk Roc?, It's main strength could be belligerence.  It wouldn't be a monster, but an annoyance. Whaddya think?
gg: Hmmm... Posts the stats so we can all have a look and judge the potential for the critter. Maybe do a Hard Roc too, for comparison and contrast.

kp: Do you have any questions for kittenpants?
gg: Sure! That's an interesting moniker. Please explain in detail how you came by it ;-}>
kp: Magick.

Thanks to Dan B., Brian, Weber, and Jon for helping with the questions. And thanks to Mr. Gygax for the interview. Check out his website.
