INTERVIEW: Gary Gygax

kp: Who are some of your favorite artists? Authors?
gg: I find Chinese landscapes compelling. Also Monet and most of the other French impressionists rate high in my esteem. As for authors, I read many. In fantasy/SF Jack Vance is my absolute favorite, but many others are enjoyed. In the original AD&D DMG I give a list of many such in an appendix.

kp: What is more important - strength or charisma?
gg: Or perhaps Intelligence? It depends on the campaign, the person playing the character, the DM too. In a campaign that has much roleplay, I'd rate Charisma higher. In one that is mainly H&S, go for Strength every time.

kp: Do Renaissance fairs give you the willies?
gg: Nah! they're fun now and again, but after going to several, I am pretty much bored with them now. Not much new and interesting from one to another.

kp: Do you still play D&D for enjoyment, or has it become all business?
gg: I play the LEJENDARY ADVENTURE RPG for business and enjoyment. I play old and original D&D for pure fun. I play new D&D for business, and original AD&D for nostalgic fun. Fact is, I can have fun playing any RPG, if the GM is good. I think that the LA game, and old METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA wierd fantasy RPG, top my list for most enjoyment.

kp: What is your preferred class (fighter, magic user, thief, cleric, etc)?
gg: Generally it sepends on my mood at the time. M-u is my most favorite, but I enjoy fighter or thief play too. I have a great time playing Louhi Sharpnose, a gnome illustionist-thief. It's been a long time since I've played my cleric PC, rigby.

kp: Do you prefer V8 juice or Yoo-hoo?
gg: Plain tomato juice with a dash of Worstershire, hot sauce, celery salt, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and a double jigger of Sky vodka, if you please :)

kp: What was the first concert you ever went to?
gg: I believe it was at Ravinnia in the north suburbs of Chicago when I was about age 6. Something by Motzart was played, but I can't recall what... Many years later, I went to various jazz clubs and concerts. Later still, I caught some rock at Alpine Valley near Lake Geneva.
